Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen Review: New Korean Holy Grail?

Being on the lookout for new sunscreens has kind of become my hobby over the last few years. If there is a new sunscreen coming up, I simply have to get my hands on it. So, when Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen became a viral sensation on TikTok this past summer, I had to give it a try.

The official name of the product that took TikTok by storm is Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF 50: Rice + Probiotics. It is formulated with 30% rice extract and grain fermented extract. The sunscreen gives the skin a natural glow and easily applies to the skin.

So, in this Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen Review, we’ll see what the fuss is about. But first, let’s get our product claims straight.

About the brand: Beauty of Joseon

The brand itself – Beauty of Joseon has a quite moving back story: Joseon was a dynasty that ruled over the Kingdom of Korea for 500 years. The upper-class women of the Joseon dynasty regarded clean and clear skin as a sign of beauty instead of makeup. They relied on the ritual of Hanbang – the tradition of using herbs as skincare. This is exactly what the brand’s philosophy is about. You can see that it is reflected in the brand’s main ingredients – the usage of ingredients such as rice, ginseng, green tea, propolis, and Centella Asiatica.

Niacinamide (aka Vitamin B3) in another ingredient that works for oily prone and combo skin.

Texture

Easily spreads on the skin, and feels very gentle and lightweight. Also, no fragrance!

Voila! Blends into the “NOTHING” on the skin. Also, leaves no white cast.

The texture of the Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen is creamy and light. It feels like a moisturizer, although I wouldn’t use it as a moisturizer. It has a glowy finish, however, after setting in the skin the glow turns into a more natural finish. It is absolutely weightless and soft on the skin. I experienced no problem with absorption, it sank into the skin right away.

Overall Impressions: Is the Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen worth the attention it got?

Long story short, I think the Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen totally deserves the attention it got over the last year. It is pretty much on par with my favorite Korean sunscreen – COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream, largely due to their similar lightweight textures. I haven’t experienced any pilling with the Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen, however, the COSRX sunscreen would pill up on me sometimes. I’d say the first one is a lovely alternative to the COSRX one if you have sensitive skin. (also, minus the scent)

Things I absolutely loved:

Lovely texture: The texture is the most important thing when choosing sunscreen, at least, in my opinion. The texture of this sunscreen is exactly what sensitive skin needs – nourishing and lightweight at the same time. It sinks into the skin effortlessly, while not leaving it dry or weird. The texture is highly moisturizing and comfortable.

Doesn’t pill up and doesn’t leave a white cast: This sunscreen has no problem with layering other products. It even performed well with The Ordinary Niacinamide serum which sometimes pills up when used with other products. Another great thing about this sunscreen is that there is absolutely no reason to worry about a white cast at the end!

Works with makeup like a charm: It was one of the easiest sunscreens to work with in terms of applying makeup on top. No cakey foundation, or cracking. The foundation glided on the skin with no trouble at all. If you have oily skin, however, try to go for matte foundations to minimize the shine.

Natural glowy finish: I’ve read some online reviews about how it has almost a “no-shine” finish. I, however, tend to disagree. This sunscreen isn’t going to turn you into a disco ball but it does have some natural shine to it. I personally love it, because a healthy glow is what every skin needs!

Under 20 bucks: Let’s be honest, it is very hard to find a sunscreen that will work at a reasonable price. I feel like Beauty of Joseon really created something amazing and made it affordable for everyone.

How to use Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen?

  1. Cleanse and tone
  2. Moisturize
  3. Apply sunscreen

As a general rule, you want to go with the 2 finger method. That way you can ensure that you get full sunscreen coverage.

Also, don’t forget the neck area! Adjust the amount as needed.

I apply my sunscreen for at least 40 minutes before going out. However, waiting for 20-25 mins should be OK.

Final Verdict

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF 50: Rice + Probiotics deserves to be in the Hall of Fame of sunscreens, and rightfully so. No matter your skin type, I think you will enjoy using this one as much as I did. I mean, everyone should have a lightweight, moisturizing and budget-friendly sunscreen, am I right?

I also think this is the one I am going to repurchase soon because they need to come up with a bigger tube!
